Seattle, WA is located on the west coast, affording it great views of the Puget Sound and Lake Washington. It has been called the fastest-growing large city in the United States, with a metropolian area population of more than 3 million. The city was officially founded in 1851 and named after a Native American chief of the local tribes. It is perhaps best known today for getting a great deal of rain, being the birthplace of the famous café chain Starbucks, and is often ranked high in lists of ecoy-friendly or "green" US cities. With a great selection of art venues, events and educational institutions, it's no wonder this city is consistently ranked a Must See US city.

ARTISTIC INSTITIUTIONS
Seattle has ranked as a highly literate and educated city for many years. It is home to the state schoool, The University of Washington, as well as various private post-secondary institutions. These include a number of art colleges and schools that train passionate students in the study of a wide range of artistic mediums and professions.
- Cornish College of Arts provides academics with Bachelor of Arts degrees in music, and visual and fine arts.
- The Art Institute of Seattle offers programs in graphic design, fashion, photography and more in a hands-on environment.
- Located within the University of Washington, the School of Art, Art History and Design has a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in these areas of study.
- Sanford-Brown's IADT School of Design has academic degrees in film, game design and interior design, to name a few. Mixed media programs are available for the multifaceted.

WELL KNOWN LOCAL ARTISTS
Not surprisingly, Seattle is home to quite a few successful artists.
- Greg Colson is a Seattle-born sculptor who creates works of art from salvaged materials.
- Tuulikki Pietilä, one of the foremost graphic artists in Finland, was born in Seattle. Among her better known works, she collaborated on the comic strip The Moomins.
- Ed Brubaker, a well known comic book illustrator and writer, currently lives in the city. He has written editions of the Batman, Catwoman and Daredevil superhero comic books, to name a few.
- Dale Chihuly is a glass blower whose pieces merge sculpture and craft. He currently works and resides in Seattle.
- Gary Larson, widely known for the comic strip The Far Side, lives in this artsy city.

Annual Events

Bumbershoot is perhaps the best-known and most celebrated festival in Seattle. Held over Labor Day weekend each year since 1971, the festival features a mass of indoor and outdoor stages regularly showing musical talents from all genres and parts of the world. It is also home to comedy acts, lectures, variety and theatre shows and art exhibits.

The Bellvue Festival of the Arts takes place each July in Bellevue, WA, just across Lake Washington from Seattle. It is one of the foremost juried art and craft fairs and has been around for over 30 years. The Bellevue Arts Fair Weekend incorporates the talents of hundreds of artists, musicians and craftsmen, and includes the main Festival, the Bellevue 6th Street Fair and the Bellevue Art Museum's ARTSfair.

Each Memorial Day weekend, the Northwest Folklife Festival entertains more than 200,000 visitors with thousands of performers from numerous cultures sharing their ethnic traditions. Cultural heritage and diversity abound at this long-running festival that features music, dance, art and more.
- The Seattle International Film Festival is a well known annual event running since 1976. It shows hundreds of submitted short and feature-length films over the course of multiple weeks and presents awards to the festival's most popular film, short and documentary.
