My laboratory in the University of Washington's Department of Bioengineering makes micro-devices designed to interact with live cells. In the lab we use fluorescent dyes and take pictures to watch what the cells do. The world of the small is intriguing and fascinating. At this scale water behaves like honey and cells glow like fairy lights.
This project is called BAIT, for Bringing Art Into science and Technology, because it uses art as a bait to enhance scientific literacy. I have an interest in art and design. A few years ago I started to collect research images obtained by my lab's students. Only a few will ever appear in a scientific publication, so I created a public online gallery to display the others.
Someday the work depicted in these images may be used to create disposable kits that could replace expensive lab tests to diagnose diseases such as malaria and HIV. We hope you will enjoy the images, and at the same time learn something about the research taking place here in Seattle.
